LONDON, 20 October 2006 — Matthew Bown Gallery announced this afternoon that the owner Matthew Bown was removed from a plane bound for the UK this morning and detained by Russian authorities for questioning. Bown was detained in connection with his attempt to export works by the provocative Russian art collective The Blue Noses. The artworks are intended for exhibition at the Matthew Bown Gallery in London from 9 November 2006 and include satirical photographic collages entitled Mask Show depicting semi-naked Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President George W. Bush, al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, as well as a suicide bomber in a burqa flashing her underwear.

Blue Noses are known for their satirical and provocative videos, photographs and performances which parody and critique Russia's past and its present day capitalist boom. Their targets include political leaders, sexual and political correctness , and the platitudes of art history.  Sound familiar?  Publication of photographer Larry Fink's The Forbidden Pictures: A Political Tableau were the target of media self-censorship in the United States.
